Review: The travelling cat Chronicles

I finally got around to reading The travelling cat Chronicles, an instant international bestseller that received a lot of praise from mainstream reviewers after its publication last fall. and I’m so thankful I finally did.
This beautifully written novel about Nana the cat and his human Satoru takes the reader on a journey as the two check out three of Satoru’s longtime friends. due to unforeseen circumstances, Satoru needs to find a new home for Nana, and he wants to make sure that it’s the ideal fit. It turns out that none of them is ideal for a variety of reasons, all of them partially due to Nana making sure that he won’t be left behind.
About half of the book is narrated in Nana’s voice, and these passages are filled with gems of cattitude. When Satoru first meets Nana, he asks him “I guess you want something in exchange for being stroked?” The cat responds with his signature style: “Quick on the draw, this one. quite right. got to get something in return for having my sleep disturbed.”
This is a book about friendship, family, and connection, and about taking happiness in the small, basic things. It drew me in from the first few pages with its beautifully descriptive and typically lyrical writing style. At its core, it’s also a book about the enduring power of the bond between a cat and his human.
And while I found myself sobbing through the last 50 or so pages, this is ultimately a happy book, because the story ends in a heartbreaking, yet beautiful, loving way.

I just read it too….in addition to the touching story, I thought the translator did a terrific job in his use of colloquialisms…they were so humorous.
It’s a gift to translate, especially from Japanese to Eenglish

I only recently heard about this book, and read it within the last month. It is so moving, and the author clearly knows cats well. once I started it I couldn’t put it down. I can’t imagine any cat lover not liking it.

A friend of mine sent this book to me and I haven’t gotten around to reading it yet. I absolutely need to pull it out and read it. It does sound good.

I actually read this last year, and it’s a wonderful book! It made me cry, though. Such a sweet story. I’d absolutely recommend it to any cat lover!

This is an amazing book. I received it as a gift from one of my daughters and hope she will be able to find other books by this author. The translator did a terrific job of keeping the feel of the Japanese author.. it was a very moving story but the ending was good so I could be delighted and the crying did not carry over for a long time It may be the best cat story ever.
